John Paul Lewis, Sr. of Lumberton, NC won the 1950 North Carolina State Tournament in Goldsboro, NC.  His son John Paul Lewis, Jr. died in 1984, Lewis, Jr. wasn't that interested in checkers.  Charles Stansel also of Lumberton often played and traveled together to tournaments.
